Graves of interesting people
Discover fascinating stories - some famous, some untold
Symonds Street Cemetery holds the graves of a wide cross-section of Auckland Society. This includes many notable people, combatants and prisoners of war from the New Zealand Wars, shipwreck fatalities, children who died from infectious diseases, and five criminals who had been hung in Auckland's old gaol yard (but moved to the cemetery when a theatre and other buildings were built at that site).
