A vibrant, 10-foot tall sculpture "blooms" like a flower planted in the gallery.
The artist says of this piece: “Blomster” is a Norwegian word that means: to flower, bloom, blossom, flourish and thrive. As a Mercer Island resident, I have loved spending time in our amazing outdoor spaces and have long dreamt of one day seeing my artwork displayed publicly in our community.
Artist: Louise Hankes
Medium: Powder-coated steel
Year: 2019
The shapes that I use for my artwork are inspired by my childhood and my exposure to Norwegian folk art, such as Rosemaling and Wood Carvings by my Ancestors. My artwork juxtaposes the tightly structured and the loosely playful. I enjoy the journey from the right hemisphere of my brain to the left and back again, in the process inviting viewers to engage with color, shape, and each other.
