About the artist and the sculpture

Jeff is Mr Corrugated Iron. The iconic car he clad in corrugated iron and used to drive around is now parked in Te Papa.

Using his favourite material, Jeff has re-created some of the 50-plus islands of Hauraki Gulf. Set sail, or pull up in a bay for a picnic at Rangitoto, Motutapu, Motukorea, Motuihe, Rakino, Waiheke, Pakihi, Ponui, Rotoroa or Pakatoa.

But are they really islands? Full of water and aquatic plants, these are segments of the gulf itself, and we are standing on what remains of the terra firma. Playing with positive and negative shapes, he makes us question the relationship between land and sea.

This work is sculpted from used corrugated iron, water, galvanised steel mesh, hay, wire, wetland and aquatic plants.
