Don Chapple memorial

Guardian of the forest

This sculpture of a kererū (the New Zealand pigeon), at the entrance to Te Atawhai Whenua Reserve serves as a memorial to Don Chapple, who worked for years - often alone - to re-plant the forest in the Matiatia Valley.

The sculpture was done by Paora Te Rangiua, a Waiheke artist.

Where is it?

Just inside the bush, across the Matiatia Creek bridge.
