1990s - Subdivisions

Farms become lifestyle blocks

The Church Bay farm owned by Nick and Nettie Johnstone (which included the southern headland of Matiaitia Bay) was subdivided into lifestyle blocks in 1991. The blocks ranged in size from 5 to 14ha.

A provision of the subdivision was replanting of a minimum area with of native species, and that public walkways be established.

This was one of the first coastal subdivisions of this kind in New Zealand.

The land between Matiatia and Owhanake Bay was subdivided, with similar conditions (except that the minimum property size was now 1.5ha) in 1995.
